wreak havoc on your mind and body at night. Your mind may run wild,
preventing you from sleeping even if you are exhausted. You may even
toss and turn as you remember things that you may have forgotten to do
or need to do the following day. A great way to prepare for bed is
through a nice meditation session. If you haven't meditated before, it
revolves around breathing exercises to help you relax mentally and
physically. For a quick guide to meditating, refer here: http://www.howtomeditate.us/
The
next time you can’t sleep, try meditating for a few minutes and release
any stressful thoughts that may be keeping you awake. This will allow
you to be at peace and get quality sleep!Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-33838001632060514762012-03-13T10:30:00.000-04:002012-03-13T10:30:03.740-04:00Sleep Tip #57: Eat a Banana
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">It can be difficult to fall asleep when your
tummy is rumbling, so a nighttime snack may be what you need to fall asleep!
The problem is that many people will snack on foods that are high in sugar,
fats and other ingredients that are both bad for your health and keep you
awake. Next time you’re feeling hungry before bed, grab a banana. This fruit
contains high amounts of the sleep inducing hormones melatonin and tryptophan.
This quick little snack will help you snooze soundly!
Researchers have found that people can actually solve problems in their sleep! Dreaming can help us figure out solutions to puzzles that we face during the day. Dreams give us an abstract viewpoint of different problems we may have to solve, and these "outside-the-box" thoughts may help to find the answer.

A study conducted had college students pick a specific problem to try to solve in their dreams. The students focused on the question every night before they fell asleep and by the end of the week, 50% had dreamed about the problem while 25% had solved the problem in their dreams. That's pretty amazing! So next time you need some help with problem-solving, try doing it while you sleep!
your mattress cover or bed sheet a tad bit too large for your bed? Bed
sheets can become larger over time as the threads stretch from being
used. If you’re not looking to whip out a sewing kit, simply place a
blanket or comforter over your mattress before putting on the
cover/sheet. This will increase the surface area that the sheet has to
cover, creating a snugger fit. It will also add an extra layer of
comfort to your mattress. Think of it as a homemade pillow top cover!Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-54234205407801341182012-02-21T10:35:00.000-05:002012-02-21T10:35:00.613-05:00Sleep Tip #54: Soundproof Your BedroomNoises that come from inside and outside of the home may keep us awake at night or startle us out of our sleep. In order to make sure you get the soundest sleep possible, you can try to soundproof your bedroom. If it's the neighbors who live beneath you that are keeping you awake, it may be a good idea to add a layer of carpet to your bedroom floor. If it's outside noises that prevent you from dozing off, installing soundproof glass windows is a good solution. Soundproof windows work with your original window as a second layer of glass. The air cavity between the two windows is what helps to keep noise out. If neither of these methods work for you, invest in a white noise machine to get a good night's rest.Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-25675934249267008872012-02-14T10:00:00.000-05:002012-02-16T11:30:44.771-05:00Sleep Tip #53: Get Up if You Wake UpHave you ever woken up 10 minutes, 30 minutes, or even an hour before
your alarm clock goes off and realized you're wide awake? Many times a
person will fight this wakefulness and go back to bed until their alarm
goes off. This however may cause you to feel drowsy and make getting out
of bed harder. If you find yourself waking up before your alarm,
embrace it! This is your natural circadian rhythm waking you up because
it is morning. By getting up when your body naturally wakes you, you
will feel more energized and have a much better start to your day!Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-35816033560038335862012-02-07T10:30:00.000-05:002012-02-07T10:30:04.179-05:00Sleep Tip #52: Take Shifts When Your Children Can’t Sleep

When you are raising children with a partner, there is no
need for both parents to get a bad night’s rest. In order to minimize the
impacts of sleepless children, set up shifts for you and your partner. If you
like to go to bed early and your partner stays up late, give them the late
night shift and take the early morning one yourself. If you both tend to be
night owls or early risers, split up the days of the week where one of you is
on call for your children. This will allow both of you to equally get some
quality sleep.

Have you ever taken a nap only to wake up feeling groggy? If
you’re trying to catch up on some sleep and you end up feeling even more tired,
it means you took too long of a nap. Napping for more than 20-30 minutes will
cause you to fall into a deeper sleep. Waking up during deep sleep makes it
harder for people to shake sleepy feelings. If you do end up taking a long nap
and feel worse when you wake up, you can try using some caffeine to get rid of
grogginess. The best thing you can do is go outside and get some sunlight.
Going for a short walk outside will help lift any sleepiness your nap may have
caused you!

Research shows that sleep preserves or protects unpleasant emotional memories. While you sleep, your brain replays the day’s events and records bits of data including your emotional responses. When you are reminded of the event, your emotional response may be similar to your initial reaction. Typically, your mind will prevent you from falling asleep after such an event as a defense mechanism. The longer you are awake, the more information and thoughts will enter your mind and the less your brain will record from the traumatic experience.Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-48350962852783370852012-01-17T10:45:00.000-05:002012-01-17T10:45:01.332-05:00Sleep Tip #49: Drink Cherry Juice for Longer SleepMany people drink a glass of warm milk to induce a sleepy feeling. While milk does contain small amounts of tryptophan, there may be a better nighttime beverage for you! Next time, try drinking a glass of cherry juice. Cherry juice contains melatonin, a hormone that induces sleep. According to a study, people who drink cherry juice regularly sleep more deeply and about 25 minutes longer than those who don't.
If you are trying to get into the habit of making yourself wake up naturally, you can try to use heat. Set the timer on your thermostat to a higher temperature about an hour before you would like to wake up. Once the heat goes on, your body temperature will rise, signaling that it's time for you to get out of bed.Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-67321895349899151052012-01-03T10:30:00.000-05:002012-01-03T14:16:20.652-05:00Sleep Tip #47 - Sleep Your Way to a Great Morning

We’ve all woken up on the wrong side of the bed, stubbed our toe as we drag ourselves out of bed and sluggishly begin to get ready for the day. We’ve all missed breakfast and forgotten our cellphone on our night stand. At some point, everyone has had a bad start to their morning. The key to having a great morning is by getting the proper amount and quality of sleep. By getting great sleep you will wake up refreshed, energized and your mind will be operational. Not getting proper sleep can lead to confusion in the morning, fatigue and minimal energy. So if you can’t seem to catch a break in the morning, it’s time to figure out why you aren’t sleeping well!

The perfect New Year’s resolution should be waking up every day at a specific time. Whether it's a weekend or a weekday, putting your body on a wake schedule will not only lead to a more productive day, but it will help create a bed time. You may feel tired from not getting enough sleep the night before, which will help your body establish an earlier bed time. By sticking to this routine, you can adjust your sleep-wake cycle to match your new schedule. Getting the proper amount of quality sleep will greatly boost your health and attitude!

Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-67646452342304405002011-12-20T10:30:00.000-05:002011-12-20T10:30:03.367-05:00Sleep Tip #45: Make a Comfortable Sleep Environment for Your Baby This HolidayIf you are traveling to another destination with your baby this holiday season, it's important that they get good sleep. When staying over at a friend or relative's house, your child may feel uncomfortable because they are not familiar with their surroundings. If they are scared or confused, it may be hard for them to fall and stay asleep. In order to keep your baby feeling safe and secure, make sure you use sleep associations when putting them to bed. If you usually turn the lights off or read them a bedtime story before bedtime, continue to do so when you're away from home. Bring familiar toys, bedding or pillows to further ease them into a good night's sleep.Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-7534468860993403012011-12-13T10:20:00.001-05:002011-12-13T10:20:01.731-05:00Sleep Tip #44: Wind Down with a Cup of Decaf TeaTrying to relax before bed is always a good idea. If you have trouble falling asleep, consider drinking a cup of decaffeinated herbal tea at the end of each day. Choose between chamomile or blends that use lavender herbs, as these have been used to treat insomnia for hundreds of years. You may be surprised that even just taking the time to sit down, enjoy your tea and clear your mind before bed will put you in a relaxing state.Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-74195190090820053902011-12-06T10:30:00.004-05:002011-12-06T10:30:03.523-05:00Sleep Tip #43: How to Sleep with Psoriasis - Wear Cotton to BedPsoriasis symptoms can irritate you throughout the night, keeping you awake and making you feel fatigued in the morning. In order to get a better night's sleep with these symptoms, it is a good idea to wear soft, cotton sleepwear to bed. Cotton will not rub against your psoriasis and cause irritation during your sleep. Wearing another type of fabric to bed may cause your skin to itch, which in turn will disrupt your sleep cycle. Choose cotton for a better night's rest.Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-73150430641932090542011-11-29T10:15:00.001-05:002011-11-29T10:15:01.824-05:00Sleep Tip #42: Stop Being a PerfectionistAre you one of those people who have to make sure everything is perfect at home, at work and in your personal life? Research shows that perfectionists are twice as likely to have sleeping problems as those who are a little more lenient in their daily routine. Start learning to fall asleep even if you didn't get around to cleaning out the attic or doing the dishes. There is always tomorrow to finish your unfinished business!Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-71130082431638574862011-11-22T10:15:00.001-05:002011-11-22T10:15:00.935-05:00Sleep Tip #41: Cuddle in BedIf you are looking for a better night's sleep, the answer might be lying right next to you... in bed. It was found that couples who cuddle in bed lower their blood pressure and heart rate, making it easier for them to doze off. So when you're under the sheets tonight, hold your partner's hand or wrap your arms around him or her. Even a short ten minutes has resulted in calming effects!Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-8738884516404703402011-11-15T10:15:00.001-05:002011-11-15T10:15:00.413-05:00Sleep Tip #40: If You Read Before Bed, Choose Paper! Many people like to read before they fall asleep. If you are one who likes to read late a night, pick up a book or a magazine. Reading from a screen, like your laptop or e-reader may make it harder for you to go to bed. The light produced from the screen will stimulate you, making it harder for you to catch your Z's. Plus, reading a book will keep the printing industry alive!Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-81382051391939068772011-11-08T10:15:00.001-05:002011-11-08T10:15:01.332-05:00Sleep Tip #39: Lift Your Bed Head When You Have a ColdWhen you're feeling under the weather, getting a good night's rest could almost be impossible. Fortunately, there are ways to help relieve your cold symptoms for bedtime! Some people say that raising your head will help to drain your sinuses, but it is not wise to use pillows to accomplish that. Too many pillows will cause your neck to become strained and breathing may become difficult. Instead, try raising the head of your bed by putting large books under the legs of your headboard. This will help to create a more natural angle for you to rest on.Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-11413804999273844682011-11-01T10:10:00.000-04:002011-11-01T10:10:00.201-04:00Sleep Tip #38: Keep Your Neck in a Comfortable PositionSleeping on the right pillow is key when trying to optimize your sleep. If you wake up every morning with a stiff neck, your pillow may be either too flat or too big for you. The right pillow size will keep your neck in a neutral position throughout the night. How can you tell if it's keeping you in a proper position? If you're a side sleeper, your nose will be aligned with the center of your body. If you sleep on your back, your neck will stay in line with the spine. Stomach sleeping is not suggested as it typically twists the neck. Additionally, keep your neck in a neutral position if you watch TV to fall asleep, although we don't recommend TV either!Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-34471855216057959432011-10-25T10:10:00.001-04:002011-10-25T10:10:00.160-04:00Sleep Tip #37: Don't Look at the ClockWhat is the first thing you do when you wake up in the middle of the night? If you tend to look at the clock, it's time to stop. Looking at your alarm clock or cell phone in the middle of the night will cause you to worry about the time you have left to sleep, preventing you from falling back asleep. Try to put your cell phone or alarm clock in a drawer or under your bed. If you need your devices to wake up in the morning, make sure the screen is facing away from you. Any of these tips will help to prevent anxiety when you wake up in the middle of the night.Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-30702257637376440932011-10-18T10:05:00.000-04:002011-10-18T10:05:00.107-04:00Sleep Tip #36: Make Your BedThe secret behind making your bed is, well, there is no secret. One of the key ingredients to making a perfect sleep environment is having a clean and tidy room. That extends all the way to your bed. Getting up and making your bed will not only lead to a more calming environment, but it will also help alleviate morning stress. Have you ever lost your keys or phone and found them tangled in the covers? Making your bed first thing will help keep you from accidentally losing your possessions in the morning. Some people may try to force themselves to fall back asleep, which causes more stress and keeps them up later. If you have already tried techniques such as visualization and breathing to nod off but they have not worked, get up. Try doing something soothing to put your mind back at ease. Writing in a journal may help ease your mind back into a sleepy state. Write out lists or create a poem or limerick while you're awake. This will keep your mind occupied and not worried about the fact that you aren't asleep, helping you to doze off easily when the time comes.Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031315443812008567.post-88969957829606833862011-10-04T10:10:00.001-04:002011-10-04T10:10:00.059-04:00Sleep Tip #34: Wake Up During the Night? Fighting it will cause pain and not let you sleep, so most of us give in to the urge. One mistake many people make is by turning on their room light or bedside lamp. Turning on such a bright light will abruptly force your eyes to begin adjusting to the intense brightness, often times tricking your brain into believing it is time to wake up. When this happens it may be increasingly harder to fall back asleep, as your body prepares to begin daily activities. It is recommended to use a nightlight or flashlight when you wake up at night so you do not trigger your brain into believing it is morning. This will make much easier to doze off again once back in bed.
Sleep Optionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12247989184116964474noreply@blogger.com0
